James K. Moran Profiles Travis Edmonson

Jim Moran is a teacher, writer, and member of the folk trio Chilly Winds that performed for Travis Edmonson  in 2003 and 2004 and jammed with him late into the night on both occasions. Here is his story behind a new video of Travis on You Tube.

“I had the pleasure of hanging out with Travis (and singing with him) at the Trio Fantasy Camp in Scottsdale in his last five years or so. At the request of some of his friends, I posted a video (I edited it for upload but didn't shoot it) of Travis singing "Everybody Loves Saturday Night" with Bob Shane and the KT in 2004. The video is here:

My notes for the video may be more useful:

"Folk music legend Travis Edmonson performs one of the most opular calypso-flavored songs from the folk revival on the 1960s, ccompanied by Bob Shane, founding member of the Kingston Trio, and the 2004 incarnation of that legendary group, Bill Zorn, George Grove, and Bob Haworth.  The video was shot at a show in cottsdale, AZ, in August of 2004 - on a Saturday night.

Travis Edmonson had a marvelous and distinguished career of over fifty five years bringing American folk music back to Americans of all backgrounds, both as a soloist and as a member of what some consider to be the musically most accomplished of the 60s-era bands, Bud and Travis.

In addition to discovering and singing songs from the world over, Travis has had an especially close association with the rich Spanish language heritage in music of his beloved Arizona, and he must be credited with bringing much of this marvelous music to a wider English-speaking audience across the U.S. and around the world.

When this video was recorded, Travis had suffered through a number of health issues, but as the performance attests, his voice and his generous spirit have never flagged. Watching Travis play around with Shane, a close friend for half a century, is one of the delights of this performance.

Travis passed away on May 9th, 2009, at the age of 76. But his contributions to American culture as a folksinger and as an innovator who brought Mexican folk music into the English language mainstream remain, as do the warmth and generosity of this superlative artist and man."
